How to Hook Up a Bed Headboard to a Metal Bed Frame
Adding a new bed headboard to a metal bed frame is a great way to change or update the look of your bedroom without breaking your budget. Headboards are available in a wide range of materials, colors and textures, which will enable you to select a model that enhances your decor. Some headboards have storage space or cabinetry that can accommodate items that you regularly use at bedtime, such as a lamp and reading materials. If you purchase your headboard and bed frame separately, you must attach the two components to provide stability for the headboard.
This project requires the help of an assistant and hand tools, such as a wrench or screwdriver. Remove the mattress and box spring from the frame, and pull the frame away from the wall. Place the headboard close to the position where it will remain after the assembly process is complete. Ensure that the headboard is standing upright, and slide the bed frame so that the attachment points for the bed frame align with those on the headboard.
Generally, furniture manufacturers supply the bolts, washers and nuts required to attach their headboards. If the holes do not align with your frame or the headboard is secured with hooks instead of bolts, you will need an adapter kit. Remove the pre-installed bolts and attach the adapter in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Most headboards and frames are assembled in a similar manner. After you align the bolt holes on the two pieces, insert a bolt through the hole on the back of the headboard and the bed frame. The bolt should extend through the front of the headboard and the hole on the bed frame. As you tighten the nut on the bolt, press the frame and headboard together. This technique will ensure that you achieve the most stable and secure fit. Follow the same procedure for the hole on the other side of the headboard and frame. Repeat the process if there are two holes on each side of the headboard. Gently tug on the two components to ensure they are securely fastened together.
Move the newly assembled bed into its final position. Reassemble the box spring, mattress and bedding.
